(Albany, NY - May 28, 2008) - Governor David A. Paterson today joined New York State Police Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt to commend and recognize 39 honorees for bravery, investigative persistence, police education, traffic safety and community service at the New York State Police Annual Awards Day Ceremony. The annual ceremony, held at the New York State Police Academy, pays tribute to the courage and perseverance of sworn and non-sworn members of the New York State Police.

To our valued Military Applicants:
Military applicants who already signed up for the entrance examination prior to the December 1, 2007 deadline and were unable to attend one of the exams held in early 2008 may eligible for a supplemental exam.

If you already applied, were on Federal active duty status during the initial testing in early 2008, and could not take one of the exams offered then, we have scheduled a suppplemental Military examination on October 4, 2008 in Albany, NY.

We anticipate offering additional locations and test dates in the future. You must take the first supplemental exam that you are available for, and you will be required to show documentation of your Federal active duty status during the entire original testing period of January 19 - February 9, 2008.

To be scheduled for a future military supplemental exam, please call our exam detail at (518) 485-0855 to request a supplemental date. There is no charge to update testing dates and locations.

The opportunity to take the entrance examination for the position of New York State Trooper comes around just once every four (4) years. This examination will cover the hiring period of 2008 through 2012.

Military Applicants

  • Military officer and a Trooper standing saluting side by side Veteran's Preference Credits - If you are or were a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on a full-time active duty basis (other than for training programs), you may be eligible to have extra credits added to your passing score on the NYSP Entrance Examination. If you claim the extra credits at the time of your application, you will have the option to waive the extra credits later if you wish. However, if you do not choose to use your veteran's credits before taking this exam, you cannot apply them to your exam score later. If you score well enough on the examination to be appointed without the use of the extra credits, your credits will be restored and may be used for other New York State government employment or for a New York State Police promotional exam.

    Non-disabled veterans who meet the criteria describe below, are entitled to receive five (5) extra points. Disabled veterans who are currently receiving payments from the US. Department of Veterans Affairs for a service connected disability rated at 10% or more, and who meet the below criteria are entitled to receive ten (10) extra points.

    You qualify for Veteran's Preference credits, if you:

    • Received or expect to receive an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces*; AND

    • Served anywhere as a member of the US. Armed Forces* on full-time active duty basis, other than for training programs between August 2, 1990 and the present, OR

    • Received the Armed Forces, Navy, or Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal for hostilities in one of the following:

      • Panama (Dec 20, 1989 - Jan 31, 1990)
      • Grenada (Oct 23, 1983 - Nov 21, 1983)
      • Lebanon (Jun 1, 1983 - Dec 1, 1987

      * U.S. Armed Forces includes: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and the National Guard, when in the service of the United States pursuant to call as provided by law on a full-time active duty basis, other than active duty for training purposes.

    • Veterans with at least two (2) years of active duty service in the United States military and an honorable discharge may be eligible to receive a 30 College Credit waiver. In certain circumstances, reserve forces veterans who have been activated for federal military service and who received a DD Form 214 with an honorable discharge, may also be considered for the waiver. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.

  • Military veterans may be eligible for an extension of the application age limit. Up to 6 years (72 Months) may be added to the maximum age limit of 29, depending on length of active duty service. In order for the service time to be credited it must be active duty service. Federal service for training purposes does not apply for reserve forces. Contact your recruiter for further information regarding extensions to the age limit.

  • Active duty individuals may participate in the selection process if they are within 6 months of separation from their respective service. Candidates may not be appointed while on a terminal leave status and must have completely separated prior to their attendance at the academy. In certain circumstances such as AGR tours, individuals may be allowed to process. This is handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • After five (5) years of service with the NYSP, veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military may apply to buy back up to three (3) years of their service time to use towards their retirement with the NYSP. The veteran's service credit is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • NYSP members may continue their military career in the reserve forces. Reserve members are eligible for up to 240 hours in paid leave annually to attend military training.
