New York State Police Governor Addresses 88 New State Troopers
Albany, NY (June 9, 2009) - Governor David A. Paterson and New York State Police Superintendent Harry J. Corbitt today honored 88 new troopers at ceremonies marking the completion of the 197th Session of the Basic School of the New York State Police Academy. The new troopers will report for field duty on June 23, 2009, and for the following ten weeks will be evaluated under a field-training program supervised by senior Field Training Officers.

New York State Police New Troop G Headquarters Plans Move Forward
(Albany, NY - March 13, 2009) - Plans to build a new Troop G Headquarters for the New York State Police continue to move forward. As a result of major deficiencies and the outdated state of the current facility built in Loudonville in 1957, the State Police initiated relocation plans in January of 2003. Legislation authorized the sale of the current Troop G Headquarters property to Siena College in August of 2003, and in June of 2006 the transfer of ownership was executed. State Police anticipate breaking ground for site preparation in June of this year.

  • Military officer and a Trooper standing saluting side by side Veteran's Preference Credits - If you are or were a member of the U.S. Armed Forces on a full-time active duty basis (other than for training programs), you may be eligible to have extra credits added to your passing score on the NYSP Entrance Examination. If you claim the extra credits at the time of your application, you will have the option to waive the extra credits later if you wish. However, if you do not choose to use your veteran's credits before taking this exam, you cannot apply them to your exam score later. If you score well enough on the examination to be appointed without the use of the extra credits, your credits will be restored and may be used for other New York State government employment or for a New York State Police promotional exam.

    Non-disabled veterans who meet the criteria describe below, are entitled to receive five (5) extra points. Disabled veterans who are currently receiving payments from the US. Department of Veterans Affairs for a service connected disability rated at 10% or more, and who meet the below criteria are entitled to receive ten (10) extra points.

    You qualify for Veteran's Preference credits, if you:

    • Received or expect to receive an honorable discharge from the U.S. Armed Forces*; AND

    • Served anywhere as a member of the US. Armed Forces* on full-time active duty basis, other than for training programs between August 2, 1990 and the present, OR

    • Received the Armed Forces, Navy, or Marine Corps Expeditionary Medal for hostilities in one of the following:

      • Panama (Dec 20, 1989 - Jan 31, 1990)
      • Grenada (Oct 23, 1983 - Nov 21, 1983)
      • Lebanon (Jun 1, 1983 - Dec 1, 1987

      * U.S. Armed Forces includes: Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marine Corps, Navy, and the National Guard, when in the service of the United States pursuant to call as provided by law on a full-time active duty basis, other than active duty for training purposes.

    • Veterans with at least two (2) years of active duty service in the United States military and an honorable discharge may be eligible to receive a 30 College Credit waiver. In certain circumstances, reserve forces veterans who have been activated for federal military service and who received a DD Form 214 with an honorable discharge, may also be considered for the waiver. This is determined on a case-by-case basis.

  • Military veterans may be eligible for an extension of the application age limit. Up to 6 years (72 Months) may be added to the maximum age limit of 29, depending on length of active duty service. In order for the service time to be credited it must be active duty service. Federal service for training purposes does not apply for reserve forces. Contact your recruiter for further information regarding extensions to the age limit.

  • Active duty individuals may participate in the selection process if they are within 6 months of separation from their respective service. Candidates may not be appointed while on a terminal leave status and must have completely separated prior to their attendance at the academy. In certain circumstances such as AGR tours, individuals may be allowed to process. This is handled on a case-by-case basis.

  • After five (5) years of service with the NYSP, veterans who have received an honorable discharge from the military may apply to buy back up to three (3) years of their service time to use towards their retirement with the NYSP. The veteran's service credit is assessed on a case-by-case basis.

  • NYSP members may continue their military career in the reserve forces. Reserve members are eligible for up to 240 hours in paid leave annually to attend military training.
