FAQ

How can I receive more information about becoming a New York State Trooper?

Read all the information in the Trooper Employment Section on this site. If you still have questions, contact your local Recruitment Officer.

I am in the Military, I applied for the 2008 exam, and I was deployed during the January and February 2008 test dates. What should I do?

Military personnel who signed up to take the 2008 entrance examination, but could not take the exam because of Federal activation status, should click here for more information.

When will I get my score?

Candidates should expect grades 10 –12 weeks after taking the examination. If you have moved but did not notify us of your new address, please update your contact information.

How soon will I be called for further processing after receiving my grade?

Candidates are processed in rank order based upon exam score and any applicable Veteran's Preference credits. Depending on the number of vacancies that are authorized to be filled, the first Academy class from the new list is projected to be appointed in the Fall of 2008. The first phase of the selection process for that class will be conducted during the summer of 2008. Candidates reached for the first phase will receive an invitation in the mail. The first phase of the selection process includes college credit review, physical ability test, height/weight check, vision test, and document review.

Note: We are still processing candidates from the 2004 exam. If you took the 2004 exam, you should contact your local Recruitment Officer to determine your status.

How do I change my address or other personal information?

Please update your contact Information at this site.

If I have other questions regarding the exam, qualifications, or other concerns who should I contact?

Contact your local recruiter.

Does successful passing of the examination guarantee me a position in the Academy.

No. Candidates are processed in rank order based upon exam score and any applicable Veteran's Preference credits. We typically conduct processing for two academy classes per year. Based upon the size of the class, we process approximately 10 candidates for 1 vacancy. This means, for example, that for a class size of 100, we will canvas around 1,000 candidates to attend a processing. Classes typically range in size from 100 to 200, depending on the number of vacancies authorized to be filled.

My rank is a very high number. Will I ever be reached on the list?

Do not get discouraged by the rank. The list established in 2004 has been utilized for three years. We have processed beyond the rank of 10,600. Whether we will reach your rank or not depends on how long we will utilize the list, the number of retirements and separations from service, selection process attrition, and the number of vacancies authorized to be filled.
