Eligibility List

The New York State Police offers an open competitive exam every 3 to 4 years. All the candidates are ranked based on their score from the written entrance exam and an eligibility list is established. The list can range into the thousands and depends on how many candidates pass the exam. In 2004 the list exceeded 17,000.

Candidates are called for further processing in rank order. We typically conduct processing for two academy classes per year. Based upon the size of the class, we process approximately 10 candidates for 1 vacancy. This means, for example, that for a class size of 100, we will canvas around 1,000 candidates to attend a processing. Classes typically range in size from 100 to 250, depending on the number of vacancies authorized to be filled.

Do not get discouraged by your rank. Whether we will reach your rank or not depends on how long we will utilize the list, the number of retirements and separations from service, selection process attrition, and the number of vacancies authorized to be filled. The list established in 2004 has been utilized for three years and we have processed beyond the rank of 10,000.

Due to the fact that we might not reach your rank for a year or more in some cases, it is vitally important you keep your contact information current. We can not hire you if we can not reach you.
