If you are invited for further processing but can not attend, a deferment may be granted in certain cases. If you can not attend processing, write a letter explaining why you can not attend and request a deferment for a future Academy class processing. Deferments are granted on a case-by-case basis. The deferment request should be mailed to:
Member Hiring Unit
New York State Police
1220 Washington Avenue
Albany, N.Y. 12226
If you are in the military and can not attend due to an activation or deployment, please outline your circumstances in a letter requesting a deferment to the address listed above. Upon return, contact your local recruiter and send a letter to the Trooper Candidate Unit advising that you have returned and are available to continue with the hiring process.
If you are invited for further processing but do not have the required number of college credits, you will need to request a deferment. Candidates in consideration for an Academy class are processed approximately 6 months prior to the date the class is to be appointed. The college credit requirement pertains to the date of appointment, not the date of processing. If the number college credits you have completed falls below the requirement by more than six (6) credits, and you are not currently enrolled in sufficient course work to satisfy the requirement at the time of processing, an educational deferral request in writing should be submitted. if there is no way you can obtain the required number of credits by the established deadline outlined in the trooper candidate processing packet/letters of invite, you should write a letter requesting a deferment to a later class in order to complete college. The deferment request should be mailed to the address listed above.
Deferments are not usually granted for reasons related to not being physically fit and ready for the physical ability test. Injuries will be evaluated on an individual basis.
